Glyricidia (Gliricidia sepium) is multi-purpose legume fodder tree, medium-sized tree that grows 10-12 meters, composite leaves that can be 30 cm long; each leaf is composed of leaflets that are about 2-7 cm long & individual leaf is 1-3 cm wide. Today it is used for many purposes including fodder, live fencing, firewood, green manure, inter-cropping & rat poison. Leaves contain 20-22.3 % crude protein, fiber content is 19.7 % and are nutritious for cattle, sheep & goats but are TOXIC TO HORSES. Cultivation of crop can be done by using both seeds & cuttings. Seed rate is 700-900 gm/acre. First cut takes after 8 months and subsequent harvests at an interval of 90-100 days once. Maintain spacing for 5 x 5 m. Green fodder yield is 6-7 tonnes/ha. Sow during the wet season, when soil temperature is over 25°C. Seeds soak the normal water during over night and then sow the next morning. Note: 1. Farmers should maintain nursery method like single seed, filled with vermin-compost in pro-tray or juice cup and planting in the field after 30-40 days. 2. Mature animals should be feed 2.5% body weight on a dry matter basis & having high tannin content it is recommended that it should comprise no more than 20% of the animal’s daily feed intake.
